TREE Abundant in the mountains, it is found in some areas of the Vosges. It is very resistant to cold and drought. An average height tree, trunk rather straight in the Vosges, requires full light. CLIMATE Insensitive to cold and summer drought. It is a rustic species, needles in pairs and small cones . GROWTH AND FELLING AGE Growth average to slow in the Vosges, felling between 60 and 120 years. THE TIMBER Timber with a salmon red core and white sapwood, characteristics variable according to source. Fine grain, growth regular in the northern Vosges. Grain straight and fine for pines in Vosges and Alsace. Very fine and few resinous canals. Density average, semi-heavy timber, timber from Vosges and Alsace particularly stable. Shrinkage average to high. Heartwood durable, sapwood to be treated. |
