TREE A mountain species the spruce has a considerable potential for adaptation. Established in the Vosges, at altitudes from 200 to 800 m, it is used as a plantation species down to the plains. Tall, straight and cylindrical tree,
needles arranged in spikes, cones
pendulous.
CLIMATE The spruce thrives particularly well on the constantly cool, moist and well aerated soils of the valleys of the Vosges It is very resistant to cold.
GROWTH AND FELLING AGE Fairly fast growth.
Felling between 40 and 100 years.
THE TIMBER White, very light coloured timber. Rings are visible, circular and of regular width. Tight grain for the mountain trees, quite coarse for timber from the plain. Grain very straight - Density average to low.
Performance / weight ratio particularly high. Average shrinkage. Has fine and hardly visible resinous canals.
